Transcritical CO2 Refrigeration System in Skagit

Nordic Temperature Control installed a high-tech Transcritical CO2 Refrigeration System for a food processing facility in Skagit County.

In transcritical CO2 refrigeration systems, often referred to as booster systems, the CO2 operates sometimes or exclusively above the critical point. Unlike subcritical systems, transcritical CO2 systems include a gas cooler to dissipate heat and utilize a high-pressure expansion valve to control introduction into the evaporator. Transcritical CO2 booster systems are the best solution for using natural refrigerants in a retail context.

As a highly qualified HVAC-R contractor, Nordic Temperature Control was an essential part of the equation to optimize the safety and effectiveness of the new system. It is rewarding to know that our HVAC technician’s efforts during this project work to maintain the highest quality craftsmanship and best practices for the CO2 HVAC-R system.

Transcritical CO2 System

In transcritical CO2 refrigeration systems, often referred to as booster systems, the CO2 operates sometimes or exclusively above the critical point. Unlike subcritical systems, transcritical CO2 systems include a gas cooler to dissipate heat, and utilize a high-pressure expansion valve to control introduction into the evaporator. Transcritical CO2 booster systems are the best solution for using natural refrigerants in a retail context.

There are a few notable benefits associated with opting for transcritical CO2. First, when compared to other refrigerants, carbon dioxide is much cheaper on a per-pound basis. For example, R-410A, a popular HFC refrigerant, averages between $6 and $8 per pound. On the other hand, we regularly buy CO2 for less than a dollar a pound.

Unlike synthetic refrigerants like R-134 and R-404A, which have Global Warming Potentials of 1400 and 3260, respectively, CO2’s is negligible with a Global Warming Potential of 1. Because of this, CO2 is often referred to as “future proof,” meaning that as regulatory agencies continue to evaluate and outlaw synthetic refrigerants due to environmental reasons, CO2 will remain a viable option.

Heat Pump Installation Burlington, WA

Project Description

Many homeowners in Burlington and throughout Skagit County have discovered that heat pumps can be an effective alternative to typical electrical, propane, and oil powered furnaces.  As you can see, Nordic Temperature Control was hired to install an energy efficient Echelon™ Split System Heat Pump by Coleman. This heat pump installation was completed for a local customer in Burlington, WA.

What is a Heat Pump?

A heat pump draws on external energy at only a fraction of the rate of a typical heating system, and it pumps warmed air into a controlled space after drawing warmth from the outside air and ground. A heat pump can provide the same amount of heat as a typical resistance heater using only one-third to one-fourth the electricity. This can amount to huge savings on heating bills.

Before any heat pump project, a Nordic Temperature Control technician will thoroughly inspect the project site to ensure a heat pump will be a reliable and effective solution for heat. Heat pump installation is typically more expensive than standard heating installations, but our team will clearly outline all of the service, labor and parts costs before starting work. There are no hidden surprises when it comes to billing from Nordic Temperature Control. We stand by the quality of our work in every project with our Lifetime Craftsmanship Warranty, and we want customers to know they can rely on us for all their future heating and cooling needs.

Heat Pump for Air Conditioning

Although the heat pump is widely known as a heating system, it can act as an air conditioner as well. When the temperature outside rises, it will remove heat from your home and send it outside like a standard AC unit. Because of how it functions, a heat pump is one of the most versatile and energy-efficient cooling units on the market.

A heat pump in cooling mode also removes excess moisture from the air. It provides a compact, energy-efficient alternative to a standard AC unit for homeowners throughout the Pacific Northwest.

Lifetime Craftsmanship Guarantee

Energy efficiency in building comfort starts with great system design, using energy star rated products, and installing the system with expert craftsmanship. As a client of Nordic Temperature Control, rest assure that our key partnerships with HVAC industry leaders allow us to continually design and deliver high performing, cutting-edge heating and cooling systems.

Client Testimonial

Nordic Temperature Control was recommended to us by the Natural Gas Company’s website.  When I moved to the area, my home had natural gas for the water heater, heater and fireplace, but I also needed natural gas for the clothes drier and range. During the most busy time of the year, they were able to schedule me in fairly quickly and his very fair estimate came in spot. The design, quality of the materials and expertise of the installation were nothing short of exceptional. I highly recommend them!

Project Description

Skagit Imaging PavilionTrico Companies, LLC Burlington WA | Nordic Temperature Control is a brand new facility, which will bring the latest in breast and mammography to the Skagit Valley. The general contractor for this project, Trico Companies selected Nordic Temperature Control to help design and install the new facilities commercial HVAC system.

As a highly qualified HVAC contractor, Nordic Temperature Control was an essential part of the equation to optimize the safety and effectiveness of new imaging center. It is rewarding to know that our HVAC technicians efforts during this project worked to maintain the highest quality craftsmanship and best practices for a hospital HVAC system.  In fact, the Skagit Imaging Pavilion project had a strict design and installation timeline, which relied on our team of HVAC experts to adhere to federal energy building standards.

As with any commercial HVAC project, a well designed and properly functioning system is essential for the highest level of comfort, efficiency, and indoor air quality. Our company is among the top providers of commercial HVAC services throughout the Pacific Northwest, including equipment and duct installation, repair, and maintenance.

Special HVAC equipment and procedures found in this project includes:

  • Heat Recovery Ventilation (HRV)
  • Diakin Variable Refrigerate Volume (VRV) Heat Pump
  • Dedicated Outside Air System (DOAS) connected to the HRV
  • Dedicated chillers for the MRI room and CT room
  • HVAC controls

HRV Systems

On this project Nordic Temperature Control installed a heat recovery ventilation (HRV) system which works between two sources at different temperatures. Heat recovery is a method which is increasingly used to reduce the heating and cooling demands of buildings, such as medical centers. By recovering the residual heat in the exhaust gas, the fresh air introduced into the air conditioning system is pre-heated (pre-cooled), and the fresh air enthalpy is increased (reduced) before the fresh air enters the room or the air cooler of the air conditioning unit performs heat and moisture treatment.

A typical heat recovery system in buildings consists of a core unit, channels for fresh air and exhaust air, and blower fans. Building exhaust air is used as either a heat source or heat sink depending on the climate conditions, time of year and requirements of the building. Heat recovery systems typically recover about 60–95% of the heat in exhaust air and have significantly improved the energy efficiency of buildings.

Daikin VRV Systems

On this project, Nordic Temperature Control also installed a Daikin VRV System.  VRV (Variable Refrigerant Volume) is a modular, commercially applied air-conditioning and heating system that distributes refrigerant, rather than water, from the outdoor unit to multiple indoor units providing efficiency, individual user control and reliability in one package. Absolute comfort and efficiency is achieved with Daikin’s industry-leading variable speed Inverter compressors. This means that only the amount of energy required is used to provide the necessary cooling or heating to each individual indoor unit. The VRV system installed by our team in the Skagit Imaging Pavilion controls 15 seperate zones/rooms.

As you can see from the images, our team of HVAC technicians strategically installed the VRV systems on the buildings’ rooftop with expert precision.
